Why is Sodium Hydroxide in soap?
Sodium hydroxide, also known as lye or caustic soda, is used in soap making because it's an alkali that reacts with fats and oils to create soap through a chemical process called saponification. During this reaction, the sodium hydroxide converts from an alkali into soap, and no sodium hydroxide remains in the final product. The high alkalinity of sodium hydroxide also helps soap break down dirt and grease, making it more effective at cleaning. However, it's important to balance the alkalinity carefully to ensure the soap is compatible with the skin. (Copied directly from a google search).

To make hard soap sodium hydroxide is used, liquid soap contains potassium hydroxide.
Although sodium hydroxide is required it does have it's own benefits as well.
